TNPSC Group 2: Check Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Prep Strategy for Prelims

TNPSC Group 2: The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission has released the official notification for the Combined Civil Service Exam for the recruitment to Group 2 posts on the official website (tnpsc.gov.in) of the Commission on 23 February 2022. The last date for submission of online applications is 23rd March 2022. The Preliminary exam will be held on 21 May 2022 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the date of the Main written exam will be declared after the declaration of the Prelims Exam Results. Read on to know more about TNPSC Group 2 including Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Prep Strategy for Prelims, etc.

TNPSC Group 2

The TNPSC Group Examination scheme includes the Prelims, the Mains, and the Oral Test (Interview+Counseling) for Interview posts and the Prelims and the Mains for Non-Interview posts. The Prelim Exam is a screening exam for admission into the Mains Exam in both cases. There are a total of 116 vacancies for Interview Posts and 5413 vacancies for Non-Interview Posts.

TNPSC Group 2 Exam Pattern

Candidates need to have an idea about the Exam Pattern to sit for the Prelims Exam in May 2022. It is to be noted that the Prelims Exam Pattern is the same for both Interview and Non-Interview posts. For the purpose of helping the candidates, the exam pattern for the TNPSC Prelims Written Exam is given below: 

  • Mode of Exam: Offline
  • Type of Exam: Objective-type 
  • Time Duration: 3 hours
  • Maximum marks: 300 marks
  • Qualifying marks: 90 marks
  • Language of exam: English and Tamil 

Two types of paper will be available for the Prelims exam. For more detailed information about each paper Check the table below:

Candidates are given the option to choose either General Tamil or General English for answering the first 100 questions apart from answering the second (75+25) 100 questions on General Studies, Aptitude, and Mental Ability Test. The questions on General Studies will be set both in English and Tamil and the questions on General Tamil / General English will be set in the respective languages.

TNPSC Group 2 Preparation Strategy for Prelims

Candidates appearing for the TNPSC Group 2 Prelims Exam should take note of the TNPSC Group 2 Prelims Syllabus and Exam Pattern and make a holistic preparation plan. Candidates can take note of the following preparation tips: 

  1. Candidates should start their preparation beforehand and make a study plan by allotting time for each subject to make sure the preparation for each subject is complete. 
  2. Candidates should refer to TNPSC Group 2 Sample Question Papers and Previous Year Question Papers to get an idea about the kind of questions that come in the exam. 
  3. Candidates should refer to NCERT Books to brush up their knowledge on the General Science Topics.
  4. Candidates should refer to ‘Quantitative Aptitude’ and ‘Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning’ by RS Aggarwal to study for the Mental Ability/Aptitude Test.
  5. Candidates should use State-Board i.e. Samacheer Kalvi books to prepare for the History and Geography portions of the General Studies Paper.
  6.  Keep updated with current affairs relating to India and especially Tamil Nadu.
  7. Candidates can give mock tests to evaluate their progress in study.
  8. Candidates should also check previous year analysis of the TNPSC prelims exam to get an idea about the length and level of the exam.
