Why is there a dip in vacancies in UPSC CSE 2020?
UPSC is only the recruiting body. The vacancies are identified and collated by the various departments and ministries for which the Union Public Service Commission is doing Group A and B recruitment through CSE / Civil Services exam. Thus a fall in the vacancies in these departments lead to low vacancies in UPSC CSE.
Though the vacancies this time, are more than that of 2018. Lowest vacancies of 10 years in civil services was in the year 2018.

Implications Of Low Vacancy
The fact that there are less vacancies will by no means deter candidates from applying. Thus there is only one outcome of less vacancies – High Competition.
Now more people will compete for less seats. Therefore all candidates need to up their preparation levels and bid for higher scores. It is anticipated that cut offs will be higher than last time.
