UPSC IFS 2018 Exam Pattern 2018
UPSC has announced dates for Indian Forest Service Preliminary 2018. The Preliminary Examination will be conducted on June 3, 2018, in online mode. The UPSC conducts IFS exam every year to select candidates for the Indian forest services. It is one of the three All India Services just like IAS and IPS services. Hence, it is also one among the tough exams to qualify. The IFS officers after selection are assigned State Cadres or Joint Cadres of State and the centre. They are required to serve both the central government and the state governments from time to time as per the requirement of the hour.
UPSC IFS 2018 Exam Pattern
Candidates Applying for Indian Forest Service Examination should note that they are required to appear in the civil services (preliminary examination) and qualify the same for going to the second stage of Indian forest service (mains) examination (written and interview) and Candidates desirous of applying for Indian Forest Service Examination as well as for Civil Services Examination can apply through a common online application form subject to meeting the requisite eligibility criteria by them. The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main Examination will be about twelve to thirteen times the total approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year through this examination.
The Indian Forest Service Examination will consist of three successive stages given below:
- The Civil Services Preliminary exam (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Indian
Forest Service (Main) Examination.
- The IFS Mains exam (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the
Indian Forest Service.
- Interview or Personality Test.

- Paper-1 General Studies (The marks of this Paper-1 is counted to get selected for the Mains exams).
- Paper-2 C-SAT Civil Services Aptitude test (The candidate is required only to qualify in this paper by scoring 33% of the marks).

UPSC IFS Personality Test 2018
The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of competent and unbiased observers who will have before
them a record of his/her career. The object of the Interview is to assess the personal suitability of the
candidate for the Service, critical powers of observation and assimilation, the balance of
judgment and alertness of mind, initiative, tact, capacity for leadership; the ability for social cohesion, mental and physical energy and powers of practical application; integrity of character; and other qualities such as topographical sense, love for out-door life and the desire to explore unknown and out of way places. The technique of the interview is not that of a strict cross-examination, but of a natural, though directed and purposive conversation, intended to reveal mental qualities of the candidate.
UPSC IFS 2018 Marking Scheme
(i) There will be negative marking for incorrect answers for all questions except some of the questions where the negative marking will be inbuilt in the form of different marks being awarded to the most appropriate and not so appropriate answer for such questions.
(ii) There are four alternatives for the answer to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
(iii) If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the
given answers happens to be correct and there will be the same penalty as above for that question.
(iv) If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for
Note: Applications are now invited for the Preliminary Examination only. Candidates who will be declared by the Commission to have qualified for admission to the Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination will have to apply again, in the Online Detailed Application Form which would be made available on the Website of the Commission after the declaration of Results of Preliminary Examination. The Main Examination is likely to be held in December 2018.
