Indian Navy Recruitment 2021

Indian Navy is one of the prominent branches of Indian Armed forces. Time to time recruitments of Indian Navy is published in employment newspapers as well as in daily newspapers, based upon the number of vacancies. Exams of Indian Navy recruitment are conducted by various bodies, such as Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE), National Defence Academy (Naval Academy), National Defence Academy (Navy) and NCC. IHQ MoD (Navy)/ DMPR is responsible for conducting the Indian Navy Entrance Test. This article provides detailed information about the types of recruitment conducted in Indian Navy, which body conducts the recruitment, and what is the tentative calendar of each recruitment.

About Indian Navy Recruitments 2021

To be a part of Indian Navy, age of the candidate should be between 19-24 years at the time she/he is applying. Important recruitments of Indian navy are as follows:

Selection Procedure of Indian Navy

Recruitment of officers for Indian navy is advertised in Employment News of all the important regional and national newspapers. Permanent Commission’s selection done through the NA/NDA cadet entry and also through the CDSE entry. UPSC conducts these written exams which also have interview round with the Service Selection Board (SSB). In order to enter Short Service Commission and Permanent Commissions, written examinations are not required. Selection of the applicants are done on the basis of the criteria, defined by the Naval Headquarters, (Directorate of Manpower Planning & Recruitment).

Officers in the branches of Indian Navy are recruited through one of the following mode or scheme:

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Entries

  • Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE)
  • National Defence Academy (Naval Academy)
  • National Defence Academy (Navy)
  • NCC

Direct Entry: Permanent Commission for Undergraduate Level Entry

Entry to National Defence Academy (Navy) & National Defence Academy (Naval Academy)

UPSC with IHQ MoD (Army)/ADG (Recruiting), who works as a nodal agency controls the entry to Indian navy. Exam conducted for the entrance comprises of written test and UPSC conducts the same, along with SSB interview. UPSC also conducts the medical test of Indian navy, which includes just the naval candidates and prepares the final merit list of the candidates. IHQ MoD/DMPR and (Army)/ADG Recruiting) issues the appointment letter to the NDA (Navy and Naval Academy).

Combined Defence Services Exam (CDSE)

CDSE also consists of the written exam and SSB interview, which UPSC conducts. Medical test is conducted by the Indian Navy, for only naval candidates, and then the final merit list is prepared by UPSC. IHQ MoD/DMPR issues the appointment letter. Training of the officers selected through CDSE test is conducted in the month of January/July and announcemnet through advertisemt is made in the month of November/July.

Entry in NCC

Announcement of the vacancies for the Naval Wing Senior Div NCC ‘C’ certificate holders along with the B.E./B.Tech degree is made public with the CDSE advertisement. Eligible candidates does not have to give any interview they just have to send their application directly to the IHQ MoD (N)/ DMPR via DGNCC. After that, the candidates are sent for SSB interview. Once the candidate qualifies the SSB, a medical test is conducted, if they are found fit in it, then on the basis of the merit list they are sent to Indian Navy. Commencement of the training for selected officers is conducted every year in:

  • January/July

Direct Entry: Permanent Commission For Undergraduate Level Entry : 10+2(B.Tech)

Candidates who have passed class 12th with 70% marks in PCM as well as 50% marks in English in 12th as and 10th class are eligible to apply for IN officers’ entry namely 10+2(B.Tech). From January 2017 onwards rank of JEE (Mains) has been made mandatory criteria to apply for the 10+2(B.Tech) entry. Candidates are allowed to apply for this entry twice a year, which is in Autumn Term and Spring Term. Advertisement announcing the course commencement is made 6-8 months before by NHQ, through important newspapers and in employment newspapers.

Once the application is received, shortlisting of the candidates for SSB is done through All India Rank (AIR), JEE (Main) for the BE/B Tech curriculum. Rank of the candidates applying should have the JEE (Main) rank within the validity period. Validity period here is defined as the one year from the date result is declared. After SSB is complete, preparation of merit list is done and then candidates are appointed on the basis of the merit list for the number of vacancies.

Direct Entry: Permanent Commission For Graduate Level Entries

IHQ-MoD(Navy)/DMPR take care of the direct entries and take responsibility of both Short Service Commission and Permanent Commission(PC). Candidates eligible for this position should be unmarried and vacancies for this entry is published in all the leading newspapers as well as in Employment News. IHQ-MoD(Navy) conducts the preliminary scanning, after the applications are received, in order to assess the professional ability of the candidates for Sports and Musician entries. Candidates who stands successful are sent for the SSB interviews in the following locations:

  • Bhopal
  • Bangalore
  • Kolkata
  • Vizag
  • Coimbatore

Candidates after qualifying SSB interviews are sent for the medical examination. If they are found fit then on the basis of All India Merit they are sent to the Indian Navy. Training for this batch is conducted in the month of:

  • January and July

Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET)

Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET) is the test for officers’ entry, which is controlled by IHQ MoD (Navy)/ DMPR. This test is for both, Short Service Commission (SSC) and the Permanent Commission (PC). INET is conducted two times in a year.

Exam pattern: INET (Officer) is a written examination based on the computer. Exam is divided into four sections and it is mandatory for the candidate to clear all four sections scoring 40% in each subject, seprately.

Duration: INET exam is of 02 hours
Number of Questions: INET question paper have 100 questions.
Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions are asked in paper.
Topics Covered: Important topics covered in INET are Mathematical Aptitude, General Science, General Knowledge, Reasoning & Numerical Ability and English.
Total Marks: Each section is of 100 marks.
Negative Marking: For every wrong answer 01 marks will be deducted.

Exam Centre: Candidates who are able to submit their application on time, will be allowed to sit in the Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET). This exam is conducted on any of the INET centre, as selected by the candidate, based on the slots availability at that particular centre.

Admit Card: Admit card cum call up letters for the online examination will be available to download only on the official website which is, joinindiannavy.gov.in. Admit Card carry the important details such as time and place of the exam and the date. It is available only to download only through the electronic mode and candidates have to produce it at all the selection stages. Centre opted once by the candidate, will not be changed further, irrespective of the circumstances.

SSB Shortlisting: Shortlisting of the candidates is specifically done only by IHQ of MoD (N), on the basis of the INET rank cum choice and preference. It is mandatory for the candidates to qualify all the sections separately of INET exam, in order to get shortlisted for SSB interview. Shortlisted candidates will be tentatively asked to come for SSB interviews at Bangalore for Observer and Pilot candidates and at Kolkata/Vishakhapatnam/Bhopal/Bangalore for other entries and branches. Candiates will receive an SMS on the mobile number or an email (ones added in application form) regarding their SSB interview selection. Candidates are advised not to change their email-ID and mobile number untill the selection procedure is over.

Appointment Letter and Merit List:

  • Merit list is prepared on the basis of the combined marks candidate has scored in INET and SSB, each one is given the equal weightage of 50% each.
  • Those candidates who are recommended by SSB and have cleared the medical examination are sent for training on the basis of All India Merit List for each cadre and branch as per the vacancies each cadre or branch has.

Examination Fee: The fee of the examination is defined by the government regulations. Candidate have to make the fee payment on time through only online mode. Candidates those who are submitted the fee on time will receive their admit card.

Educational and Qualifications

Candidates should aware of the education and qualification that is required to apply for the Indian Navy. Procedure of SSB

At Service Selection Boards candidates are checked and assessed for various qualities that an officer should possess. These qualities include social effectiveness and dynamic ability, social adaptability, planning and organising ability. SSB is held in two different stages, which are:

  • Stage I  Intelligence Test, Picture Perception and Discussion test
  • Stage II Psychological testing, Group testing and interview

Candidates who successfully qualify these tests are sent for medical examination.

Duration: Duration of SSB is as follows:

  • 03 to 05 days
