How UPSC exams are structured

Almost every UPSC examination runs the same three-stage shape: a preliminary test that only screens, a descriptive main examination that decides your rank, and an interview or personality test. The preliminary marks are discarded once you clear it — a fact that changes how you should allocate preparation time, because a strong prelims score buys you nothing beyond entry.

UPSC does not normalise marks

Unlike SSC, which runs multi-shift computer-based tests and equates scores across them, UPSC sets one paper in one sitting. There is no normalisation formula and no shift advantage. Published cut offs are therefore raw marks you could actually have scored, which is why UPSC cut offs are clean numbers rather than five-decimal figures.

Attempts and eligibility

The Civil Services Examination caps attempts — six for General and EWS candidates, nine for OBC, unlimited for SC and ST — and most other UPSC examinations do not. Age windows are narrow and vary by exam, and UPSC verifies eligibility against original documents only after you qualify for the interview, so admission to every earlier stage is provisional.

Choosing between UPSC exams

Candidates often prepare for Civil Services alone when a nearby examination fits better. The Indian Forest Service shares the same preliminary paper. CAPF AC, CDS and NDA suit those aiming at uniformed service. Engineering Services, Combined Geo-Scientist, IES/ISS and CMS are subject-specific and draw far smaller fields, which usually means a shorter route in for a candidate with the right degree.
