UPSC Prelims 2018 Analysis

Without a doubt, UPSC Civil Services is one of the toughest examinations of India. Not only the level of the examination is high but it is exhaustive as well. To crack the exam, candidates practically need to know everything about their area of study. The key to crack IAS Prelims exam is to have a thorough knowledge of general studies, science, history, geography, current affairs, and the list goes on.

IAS 2018 for GS Paper 1 Exam Analysis

GS Paper 1 was of 200 marks. The questions in the examination were 100 and were asked from:

  • History of India
  • Current National and International Events
  • Indian and World Geography
  • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution
  • Economics of India
  • Demographics and Social Sector Initiatives
  • General issued on Environmental Ecology
  • Bio-diversity and Climate Change
  • General Sciences

Maximum Number of Question – Were asked from economics. However, quite a lot questions were also asked from polity and environment.

Question Type: All the questions in the examination were of multiple choice type. The candidates had 4 option choices and only one of it was correct.

Marking Scheme: Each question was of was of 2 marks, which only be granted for opting the correct answer option. There was negative marking of 0.33% for not choosing the correct answer response.

  • For not attempting a question, no marks are added or deducted.
  • However, for choosing more than one answer negative marking of 0.33% will be done. This will be done even if one of the answer is correct.

Cutoff for UPSC Civil Services GS Paper 1 – To qualify the exam candidates need to secure 33% marks out of 200, i.e. 66 marks.

IAS 2018 for GS Paper 2 Exam Analysis

In GS Paper II is only a qualifying exam. The marks of it will not be added to select candidates for IAS Main exam. However, if a candidate need to qualify. The questions in IAS GS Paper II were asked from:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning
  • Decision Making and Problem Solving
  • Basic Numeracy
  • General Mental Ability

Basic numeracy included questions on numbers and their relations, orders of
magnitude, etc. The level of the questions was that of Class X level. However, the questions on data interpretation, charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. were of Class X level.

Question Type: The questions in the examination were of multiple choice type and had only one correct answer.

Marking Scheme: Each question is on 2f5 marks and negative marking of 0.33% will be done for wrong answers.

Difficulty Level: Students said that Paper 2 was tough as compared to Paper 1.
