Railway Recruitment 2026 – Get All Latest Notifications, Application Form, Vacancies

Railway Recruitment 2026: Indian Railway conducts recruitment for various posts of Railway. The candidate is notified of the job vacancies through employment notifications in print as well as through the official website. All those candidates can take part in the recruitment process who have cleared 10th & 12th, Diploma, ITI, B.E/ B.Tech, M.E/ M.Tech, B.com, M.com, BCA, MCA, CA, B.Sc, M.Sc, BBA, MBA, MBBS Ph.D. & various other streams. Candidates are advised to visit the official website of the respective Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) for the latest Railway Recruitment notification, and to apply via the common RRB application portal, rrbapply.gov.in, launched in January 2024. Latest: RRB Group D (CEN 09/2025) – 22,195 vacancies for Track Maintainer, Pointsman, Assistant and other Level-1 posts – is the flagship active recruitment right now. Notified 30 January 2026, applications closed 9 March 2026, and the CBT is scheduled 3-21 August 2026. RRB NTPC Graduate (CEN 06/2025, 5,810 vacancies) and NTPC Under Graduate (CEN 07/2025, 3,058 vacancies) are also in the exam/CBT stage.

Railway Recruitment 2026

The Indian Railways offers Railway Recruitment for various posts on an ongoing basis. Indian Railway is one of the largest railway networks in the world, with total track length of approximately 137,500 km as of March 2025 (route length is smaller, at approximately 68,500 km). Vacancies notified by the Ministry of Railways are filled by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) for NTPC, ALP & Technician, JE, Paramedical, Group D and other posts.

Note: RRB’s CEN 01-07/2024 series (ALP, Technician, JE/DMA/CMA, Paramedical, NTPC Graduate, NTPC Under Graduate, Ministerial & Isolated Categories) has completed its application stage, with most notifications now at result, document verification (DV), or final appointment stage. It has been superseded by the CEN 2025 series above as the currently active recruitment cycle.

History of Indian Railways

The first railway ran in Madras from the Red Hill Railways to transport granite for the construction of road in the year 1832. However, the first-ever passenger train in India ran for 34 kilometers with 400 passengers between Mumbai and Thane in the year 1853. Before, the trains were used only to transport goods. In the year 1873, a tram drawn by horses was introduced in Calcutta.

The first electric passenger train came in the year 1925 on 3rd of February which ran between Victoria Terminus to Kurla. The Indian railways were divided into 4 zones in 1951. In 1951, sleep coaches in the trains were introduced while soon after, in the year 1956, India’s first fully air-conditioned train ran from Howrah to Delhi. The online website of Indian Railways was introduced in the year 2000 and two years later, it started online booking and reservation on the website.

Railway Recruitment

The Indian Railways is the largest employer of the general public. It has employed over 11.7 lakh (1.17 million) employees, per the last official headcount (February 2023). The recruitments are done by two of the apex bodies of railway which are Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC). The railway recruitment board was set up in the year 1998 and has its headquarters in New Delhi, India. The board is liable for the selection procedure of the recruitment on various posts and the expenses incurred for the recruitment. There are 21 RRBs situated across all of the country. The first RRB was established by the North West railways. Candidates now apply to any RRB CEN through the common portal, rrbapply.gov.in. The most important exam of RRB is NTPC (non-technical popular category).

Records of Indian Railways

Below are some of the major records achieved by the Indian Railway during its operation:

  • The Vivek Express has the largest route in India with  4,286 km covered in 82 hours and 30 minutes. The train is stationed between Dibrugarh and Kanyakumari.
  • The fastest train with a record of 200 km per hour is Vande Bharat Express. Note that the average speed of a train in IR is 50 km per hour.
  • The longest station name in Indian Railways is Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station.
  • The highest speed noted to date is for the Gatiman Express.

Indian Railways

The Indian Railways is governed by the Ministry of Railways of Government of India. Railways of India runs more than 20,000 people per day in various kinds of trains. The trains are used for traveling of passengers as well as for transport of freight. Railways of India are divided into 18 zones which further subdivided into 68 operating divisions. It also has a railway recruitment board as well as railway recruitment cells for conducting the process of recruitment for various posts as notified by the ministry of railways. The trains are divided into locomotives, goods wagons, and passenger coaches.
