GTET Eligibility

GTET eligibility follows the NCTE framework. The qualification you need depends on the paper you sit. Only teacher-training courses recognised by the NCTE — or, for special education, by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) — are accepted.

Paper I — to teach classes I to V

Any one of the following, passed or in the final year:

  • Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education; or
  • Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 45% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, under the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations, 2002; or
  • Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.); or
  • Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education); or
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.).

Paper II — to teach classes VI to VIII

Any one of the following, passed or in the final year:

  • Graduation and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education; or
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and a B.Ed.; or
  • Graduation with at least 45% marks and a B.Ed., under the applicable NCTE regulations; or
  • Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year B.El.Ed.; or
  • Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year B.A./B.Sc. B.Ed. or B.A.Ed./B.Sc.Ed.; or
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and a B.Ed. (Special Education).

Relaxation and notes

A relaxation of up to 5% in the required qualifying marks is allowed for SC / ST / OBC / differently-abled candidates. A candidate qualifying as B.Ed. may be considered for classes I to V provided they complete an NCTE-recognised 6-month Bridge Course in Elementary Education within two years of appointment. Confirm your own combination of degree and training qualification against the information bulletin before applying — being allowed to sit the exam does not by itself prove eligibility, which is verified by the recruiting authority.
