How SSC exams are structured
SSC examinations are computer-based and run in multiple shifts across many days. Most follow a tiered pattern — an objective Tier-I that screens, a Tier-II that decides merit, and where relevant a skill test, physical test or document verification.
Why SSC cut offs carry five decimal places
Because the same examination is sat by different candidates on different papers, SSC normalises raw scores before shortlisting. The published cut off is a normalised figure, not a mark achievable on any single paper. This is the single most misread number in SSC results: a normalised 136.83 does not mean someone answered 136.83 marks' worth of questions.
Qualifying marks and cut offs are different things
Clearing the minimum qualifying percentage does not shortlist you. You must also reach the cut off for your category, which is usually far higher and is set by how many vacancies user departments finally report.
Vacancies move after the notice
SSC publishes an indicative vacancy figure with the Notice of Examination and updates it on its Tentative Vacancy page as departments confirm requirements. The final count is settled before the result stage, so the number in the original notice is an indication rather than a commitment.
