UPPSC Exam Pattern & Syllabus

Each UPPSC exam has its own pattern. Most share a common shape — a screening Preliminary exam followed by a Main exam — but they differ in the papers, the final stage and the subject focus.

UPPSC PCS

Prelims — two objective papers: General Studies I (200 marks, counts for shortlisting) and General Studies II / CSAT (200 marks, qualifying at 33%). Mains — eight descriptive papers for 1,500 marks. Interview — 100 marks. The final merit is drawn from the Mains and the Interview.

UPPSC RO / ARO

Prelims — objective: Paper I General Studies (140 marks) and Paper II General Hindi (60 marks), with negative marking. Mains — descriptive papers (General Studies, and General Hindi & Drafting, with a Hindi essay) forming the merit. Typing / Skill test — a qualifying test of typing speed. There is no interview for RO/ARO.

UPPSC APO

Prelims — objective (about 150 marks), covering General Knowledge and Law, with negative marking. Mains — descriptive, focused on the major branches of law. Interview — a personality test. The subject weight is heavily on Law.
