RRB NTPC Selection Process

Last verified 01 Aug 2026

RRB NTPC selection runs through the following stages, each of which must be cleared in sequence.

  1. First Stage CBT (CBT-1)
  2. Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)
  3. Typing Skill Test or Computer Based Aptitude Test, where applicable
  4. Document Verification (DV)
  5. Medical Examination (ME)

NTPC runs as a two-stage CBT. CBT-1 is common and used for screening; CBT-2 is post-specific and decides merit. Station Master candidates additionally sit the Computer Based Aptitude Test, while clerk-cum-typist posts require a Typing Skill Test, which is qualifying.

Both stages draw on Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Awareness, with CBT-2 set at a higher standard and carrying more questions.

Document Verification

Original certificates are checked against the details declared in the application โ€” qualification, category, age and any fee concession claimed. Certificates must be in the prescribed Annexure formats, and a certificate issued after the application closing date is not accepted.

Medical Examination

Medical standards differ sharply across NTPC posts. Station Master and Goods Train Manager are safety categories with A-2 / A-3 vision requirements, while clerical posts carry more relaxed C-class standards. Check the standard for the post before setting your preference order.

Empanelment

Candidates who clear every stage are placed on a panel published by their RRB, from which appointments are made against the notified vacancies.
