TN TRB BEO 2023: Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Vacancy, Salary

TN TRB BEO is the direct recruitment examination conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), Tamil Nadu, for the post of Block Educational Officer in the Directorate of Elementary Education under the Tamil Nadu Elementary Education Subordinate Service. The latest cycle, Notification No. 01/2023 dated 5 June 2023, was for 33 vacancies; its OMR-based examination was held on 10 September 2023 and results were released on 9 November 2023. As of 29 October 2026, TRB has not issued a newer BEO notification.

Current status of BEO recruitment

TRB's Tentative Annual Planner 2025 listed Block Educational Officer (BEO) with November as the tentative month of notification, 51 tentative vacancies and the examination in March 2026. No such notification appears on the TRB notifications page, whose latest entry is Notification 02/2026 for the Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test for working teachers (registration 27/10/2026 to 19/11/2026). The Tentative Annual Planner 2026 lists Assistant Professor, BT Assistant / BRTE, TN-TET, CMRF and SET recruitments, and BEO is not among them.

Exam pattern in brief

The 2023 examination had two parts. Part A, the Compulsory Tamil Language Eligibility Test, had 30 questions for 50 marks in 30 minutes at Class 10 standard; a candidate needed 40% (20 marks) for the main answer sheet to be evaluated, and these marks were not used for ranking. Part B was a single 3-hour OMR paper of 150 multiple-choice questions carrying one mark each: 110 marks for a general paper of degree-level subjects, 10 for General Knowledge and 30 for Educational Methodology. Only Part B marks decide the rank.

Eligibility

Educational qualification

Under Notification 01/2023, a candidate needed, as on the date of notification, a degree from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission and a B.Ed. degree. The degree must be in one of these subjects: Tamil, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Biology, Geography or History. The qualifications must follow the (10+2+3+1), (10+2+3+2), (10+2or3+3+1) or (10+2or3+3+2) pattern; a degree earned through a one-year course (double or dual degree), or SSLC, HSC, degree and B.Ed. obtained simultaneously, are not accepted.

Age limit

Under the 2023 notification, a candidate must not have completed 40 years of age on 1 July 2023. The limit is raised by five years for Backward Classes, Backward Class Muslims, Most Backward Classes / Denotified Communities, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and destitute widows of all castes. Differently abled candidates get an age concession of up to ten years over the prescribed limits.

Tamil language and Tamil medium (PSTM)

From 1 December 2021, every applicant for direct recruitment must pass the Tamil language paper of the recruitment examination with not less than 40 percent marks; in the BEO exam this is Part A. Separately, reservation for Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (PSTM) follows G.O.(Ms.)No.82 dated 16.08.2021. For BEO the notification's example is a candidate who studied from the First Standard to SSLC, Higher Secondary, the undergraduate degree and the B.Ed. degree through Tamil medium, and the evidence must be uploaded with the online application or the claim is rejected.

Application process and fee

Applications for the 2023 cycle were accepted only online on the TRB website from 6 June 2023. The last date of 5 July 2023 was extended to 12 July 2023 up to 5.00 p.m. Candidates had to upload their certificates with the application itself, including SSLC, HSC, the undergraduate degree and B.Ed. marksheets and certificates, and community, PSTM and disability certificates where claimed.

The examination fee was Rs.600, and Rs.300 for SC, SCA, ST and differently abled candidates, paid only through the online payment gateway; the fee is not refunded. Serving government employees could apply directly after informing their employer in writing, and must produce a No Objection Certificate at certificate verification.

Vacancy

Notification No. 01/2023 covered 33 Block Educational Officer vacancies for 2019–2020 to 2021–2022: 32 current vacancies and 1 backlog vacancy for BC – Multiple Disability (Category IV). The current vacancies were notified by communal turn as follows.

In the previous cycle, Notification No. 13/2019 dated 27 November 2019 was issued for BEO 2018–19 with 97 vacancies. A corrigendum and addendum dated 28 December 2021 added 23 vacancies for 2019-20 and 2020-21, raising the total to 120.

Selection process

3. Certificate verification

The minimum qualifying mark in Part B is 50% (75 marks) for other categories, 45% (67.5) for SC and 40% (60) for ST. TRB calls candidates for certificate verification in the ratio 1:1.25 on the OMR examination marks, following communal rotation. The provisional selection list is then drawn up on examination marks by merit-cum-communal rotation, and appointment orders are issued by the Director of Elementary Education.

Salary

A Block Educational Officer is appointed in the minimum pay of Rs.36900-116600 (Level-18) in the Tamil Nadu Elementary Education Subordinate Service, as stated in Notification 01/2023.
