The WBPSC Clerkship Examination 2024 has a 100-mark objective Part-I (English, General Studies, Arithmetic) and a 100-mark conventional Part-II (English plus a second language), followed by a computer and typing test. The Commission's Scheme & Syllabus for Clerkship Examination, 2024 (Advt. No. 12/2024) sets the papers below, and the standard of the examination is similar to the Madhyamik examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
Part-I (objective type)
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English | 30 | 30 |
| General Studies | 40 | 40 |
| Arithmetic | 30 | 30 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Each of the 100 multiple-choice questions carries 1 mark, and the paper lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Clerkship 2024 advertisement sets negative marking of 0.25 mark for each wrong answer, which is also printed on top of the Question Booklet.
Part-II (conventional type, written)
| Group | Paper | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Group-A | English | 50 |
| Group-B | Bengali / Hindi / Urdu / Nepali / Santali | 50 |
The Part-II paper lasts 1 hour. Only a limited number of candidates obtaining qualifying marks in Part-I are allowed to sit it. The advertisement deducts 10% of full marks from a Part-II paper if a candidate reveals their identity by writing their name, roll number or any identifying mark in the answer script.
Candidates who take Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali instead of Bengali in Group-B must pass a departmental examination in Bengali during probation before confirmation.
Computer and typing test
Elementary knowledge of computer operation and typing on computer is judged only after a candidate qualifies in Part-I and Part-II. The required speed is 20 words per minute in English or 10 words per minute in Bengali. For candidates whose mother tongue is not Bengali or Nepali, knowledge of Bengali is also tested at this stage, and average or poor performance can lead to cancellation of candidature.
