RRB Technician Selection Process
Last verified 01 Aug 2026
RRB Technician selection runs through the following stages, each of which must be cleared in sequence.
- Computer Based Test (CBT)
- Document Verification (DV)
- Medical Examination (ME)
Technician runs a single-stage CBT of 100 questions in 90 minutes with 1/3 negative marking, but the paper differs by pay level. Level 5 (Technician Grade I Signal) is weighted towards Basic Science and Engineering, while Level 2 (Technician Grade III) follows the general Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness pattern used across railway exams.
Note the qualifying threshold here: ST candidates need 25%, lower than the 30% applied in Group D.
Document Verification
Original certificates are checked against the details declared in the application โ qualification, category, age and any fee concession claimed. Certificates must be in the prescribed Annexure formats, and a certificate issued after the application closing date is not accepted.
Medical Examination
Most Technician posts carry the B1 standard; Track Machine posts require A3. Standards are listed post-wise in the CEN.
Empanelment
Candidates who clear every stage are placed on a panel published by their RRB, from which appointments are made against the notified vacancies.
