HTET Eligibility

HTET eligibility follows the NCTE framework and depends on the level you apply for. Only teacher-training courses recognised by the NCTE — or, for special education, by the Rehabilitation Council of India — are accepted.

Level 1 (PRT) — to teach classes I to V

  • Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.Ed. / D.El.Ed.); or
  • Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.); or
  • Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education); or
  • Graduation with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education.

Level 2 (TGT) — to teach classes VI to VIII

  • Graduation and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education; or
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and a B.Ed.; or
  • Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and a 4-year B.El.Ed. or B.A./B.Sc.Ed.; or
  • Graduation with at least 45% marks and a B.Ed., as per the applicable NCTE regulations.

Level 3 (PGT) — to teach classes IX to XII

  • A Master's degree in the relevant subject with at least 50% marks and a B.Ed.

Notes

Reserved-category candidates get the marks relaxation notified by the Board. A candidate qualified only as B.Ed. and appointed at the primary level must complete an NCTE-recognised 6-month bridge course in elementary education. Confirm your own qualification against the HTET information bulletin and scheme of examination before applying — being allowed to sit the test does not by itself prove eligibility, which is verified by the recruiting authority.
