About ESIC
Parliament’s enactment of the Employees ‘ State Insurance Act, 1948(ESI Act) was the first major social security law for employees in India. The ESI Act 1948 encompasses such health-related eventualities to which workers are generally exposed, such as sickness, maternity temporary or permanent disability, occupational disease or death from injury to work, resulting in wage loss or complete or partial capacity benefit.
The social security provisions contained in the Act to counterbalance or deny the physical or financial distress resulting from such contingencies are thus aimed at upholding human dignity in times of crisis by protecting against deprivation, destitution and social degradation while allowing society to retain and maintain a socially useful and productive workforce.
