Who is an Assistant Loco Pilot?

An Assistant Loco Pilot is the one who assists a Loco Pilot in driving or piloting the train. This includes calling out signal as soon as he sees someone, fine tune the Loco, attend small repairs of the Loco.


Assistant loco pilot should be always alert on duty and responsive. The responsive nature of a person who wishes to work as an ALP is tested in the aptitude test conducted by Railway Recruitment Board.


After becoming ALP, the next promotion leads to being Sr ALP, and then LP. LPs can write exams for various positions like loco foreman, loco supervisor, crew controller, power controller which have the benefit of getting running allowance without actually running.

Qualification and age limit are two most important factors when it comes to RRB ALP 2018 eligibility. The rules of Indian Railways recruitment hardly change over the years. Hence we can say with a good level of surety that the eligibility criteria for RRB ALP 2018 to be as follows.

Educational qualification

Candidate should have passed class 10. Class 10 is also known as SSC / matric / matriculation in many states.

Candidate should also have completed Act Apprenticeship / ITI. The trade in which you should have done it depends on the post. For various posts the trades are fitter, electrician, instrument mechanic, millwright maintenance mechanic, mechanic radio and TV, electronics mechanic, mechanic motor vehicle, wireman, tractor mechanic, annature and coll windler, mechanic diesel, heat engine, turner, machinist, refrigeration and ac mechanic. Or candidate can have diploma in fields such as mechanical, electrical, electronics, automobile engineering.

Selection process

Candidates who appear for ALP undergo written exam, aptitude test, document verification. Those who appear for Technician undergo written exam and document verification.

You should start studying for the RRB ALP 2018 if your aim is to crack it in single attempt. Otherwise you will have to wait for 2-3 years as these recruitments happen at a gap of 2-3 years.


The following is a rough syllabus for RRB ALP and Technician written exam.

English: Basic grammar such as articles, prepositions, voices, tenses, synonyms, antonyms.

Reasoning: Analogy, arrangements, blood ties, calendar, classification, encoding-decoding, verbal and non-verbal.

Arithmetic: Averages, factors, interest, ratios, time speed and distance, pictogram-based problems.

Mechanical (for Technician): Dimensions, heat, engine, thermo dynamics, energy, material, energy conservation, management, applied mechanics, turbo machinery, production engineering, automation engineering, kinetic theory, the strength of the material, metallurgical, metal handling, refrigerators and air conditioned, transformation of heat, etc.

Automobile (for Technician): Machine design, system theory, ic engines, heat transfer, thermo dynamics, materials applying motion, the power plant turbines and boilers, and metallurgical production technology.

Electrical (for Technician): Electrical india, rolls, cables, transfers, proved to be the fundamental electrical system, an alternative system single phase motor, three phase motor system, light, magnetism, motors.

Electronics and Communication (for Technician): Transistor, dias, digital electronics, networking and industrial electronics, electronic tube, semi-conductor physics, robotic radio communications systems and satellite matters, computer and microprocessor.

Exam Pattern

So the last time that exam was held was in 2014. There may be some changes to the exam pattern now that it has been so many years since the exam. But until the new exam pattern is available, you should refer to the exam pattern of previous year papers.

Marking scheme

+1 for correct answer and negative marking of -0.33 for incorrect answer.


Exam is held for 90 minutes.

Standard of questions is as expected to be attempted from candidates who have class 10 with ITI.

Aptitude test for ALP

In the aptitude test, there is a test battery that has five or six tests as per the post. A group of candidates take the test at once. They mark answers in OMR sheets. Components of test battery are
