NPCIL- Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is a Public Sector Enterprise. The PSU functions under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. In 1987, the company got its full registration rights as a Public Limited Company under the 1956 Companies Act. The company has been working towards operating atomic power plants and implementing atomic power projects for generation of electricity in pursuance of the schemes and programmes of the Government of India. NPCIL also has equity participation in BHAVINI, another PSU of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). BHAVINI implements Fast Breeder Reactors programme in the country.
Role of NPCIL
The PSU is responsible for designing, constructing, commissioning and overseeing the running of nuclear power reactors. It is a profit making and dividend paying company. It holds the highest level of credit rating i.e. AAA. The honour was conferred to it by CRISIL and CARE.

NPCIL’s Strength
NPCIL is currently leading 22 commercial 6780 MW holding capacity nuclear power reactors. There is a reactor fleet comprising of 2 Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) and 18 Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). It includes a 100 MW of PHWR Station at Rajasthan and 2, 1000 MW VVER reactors added in the collect recently. It is called KKNPS-1 & 2. Moreover, there is also a 1000 MW VVER (Pressurised Water Reactor type). The reactor was put in commercial operation on 31 March 2017. NPCIL has 8 reactors under construction that have holding capacity of 6200 MW.

Major Projects Handled
- NPCIL taking possession of project land for NPP at Kovvada, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh
- About the Project- Andhra Pradesh State Government has handed over a land project to NPCIL to set up a Nuclear Power Project at Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh.
- The Master Plan- NPCIL has implemented 6 units of light water reactors of AP1000 design. The design has been engineered by Westinghouse Electric Company, USA. The reactor holds the total capacity of 6 x 1208 MWe at Kovvada site in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh.
- Current Status– The land acquisition is in progress at Kovvada site
2. Completion of Inner Containment Dome Concreting at Unit-3 of KAPP-3&4 on 16th July 2017
- About the Project- Kakrapar Atomic Power Project 3 & 4 is India’s first indigenously designed Nuclear Power Reactor holding the capacity of 700 MWe series.
- Current Status- It has been in commercial use since 16th July 2017.
Special Note- IC dome concreting is one of the major activities on critical path of KAPP-3&4, completion of this activity takes us closer to project completion.
3. Calandria tube rolling in Unit-4 of KAPP-3&4 commenced on 01-July-2017
- Commencement- Calandria tube rolling for unit started on 01st July 2017.
- Current status– Till date 137/392 Calandria tubes rolling has been completed.
