UPSC Combined Geo-scientist and geologist recruitment are done based on 2 written exams and a personal interviews. The first stage is an objective exam divided into 2 papers of 2 hours each. The first paper is of 100 marks and the second paper is of 300 marks. There is also negative marking of 1/3rd marks for this paper. The candidates who clear this exam qualify to appear in the main exam. The main exam consists of 3 papers of 3 hours each. The candidates who qualify the main exam are called for a personal interview where document verification is also done.
